12 Bible Verses to Help You Overcome Negative Self-Talk
The Surprising Struggle Almost Every Woman Shared
A few months ago, while speaking at a women’s event, I discovered the serious problem women have with negative self-talk. The title of my message was: You Are A Powerful Influencer: You Have A Voice and You Have A Choice. My goal was to help them see that God created them to be powerful influencers. He gave them voices to use for the good of those they love and for His kingdom.
This meant I also had to talk about the power of our words.
Several years ago, my daughter,Taylor Draughn, LPC, LMFT, and I wrote a Bible study titled Words Matter because we knew the power and impact words have in our lives. Our words really do matter.
I also talked about the strategic way the devil works to distort and damage our influence, our words, and even our voices.
After I spoke, the women broke into smaller discussion groups. I had given them a list of questions, including one that asked them to rate their words on a scale of 1–10. One represented words that tear down, curse, or bring death. Ten represented words that build up, bless, and speak life.
I also asked them to identify any area where they:
• had allowed the enemy to distort their words or silence their voices
• did the best with blessing, building up, and speaking life
• needed the most transformation in the words they speak
Afterward, the groups came back together and shared from their discussions. What struck me was that almost everyone who shared talked about the words they said to themselves. They admitted they often said things to themselves they would never say to another human being. That moment stayed with me.
It made me realize that one of the biggest issues many women face with their words may begin in their own thought life. Negative thought patterns often produce negative self-talk, and negative self-talk can shape the way we see ourselves, God, and others. That is why I am writing this post. I want to give you Bible verses to help you overcome negative self-talk and renew your mind with the truth of God’s Word.
What is Negative Self-Talk?
Many women never stop to think about the negative thoughts they allow to take up space in their minds. Negative thinking is almost always because we are believing lies and often we have bought into a wrong identity. Last year I did a HER Podcast series, My True Identity based on the lies we believe that instill a wrong identity. Our thought life is powerful and self-criticism can be debilitating to our emotional and spiritual health.
Therefore, we desperately need our minds renewed—not simply with positive thoughts, but with the truth of God's Word. As we replace the lies we've believed with God's truth, He transforms the way we think, speak, and live.
Where Does Negative Self-Talk Come From?
Negative people and negative emotions are not the ultimate source of the lies we believe. They may contribute, but the real source of the lies we believe comes from the devil, who is the father of lies. Jesus clearly tells us this in John 8:44. Jesus also said the devil is a hater, a murderer. He has wicked schemes and his ultimate goal in all that he does is to steal, to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10). And while the Bible may not say it in those exact words, Scripture repeatedly shows us that one of the enemy’s primary places of attack is what we believe in our inner thoughts.
When I wrote my book, Equipped and Empowered: Preparing Women for Spiritual Battle, I wrote from the experience side of spiritual warfare. I had believed so many lies, but I had also learned God’s truth. God’s Word brought about a needed mindset change in me based on His life-giving truth. Now I am not ruled by negative feelings or a spirit of fear; I have learned to replace lies and live from God’s perspective. I want to help you do that as well, so I am going to give you twelve Bible verses to renew your mind.
12 Bible Verses to Help You Overcome Negative Self-Talk
1) Weapons to Win the Battle in Our Minds
Bible Verse #1 – 2 Corinthians 10:4–5
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
Bible Verse #2 – Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Ephesians 6:17
Bible Verse #3 – Hebrews 4:12
For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
These verses show us that God equipped us through His Word with effective ways of overcoming thoughts that are harmful to our mental health. God wants us to be mentally healthy, but we must first believe that God’s Word is that powerful. And we must put it into practice not only by believing His Word, but by praying His Word, and declaring the truth of Scripture over our minds as a way of replacing those negative thoughts.
2) Replacing Lies with Truth
Bible Verse #4 – Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
We replace thoughts that make us anxious with prayer and thanksgiving. Prayer is one of those spiritual weapons that 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 points us to. And I can’t tell you how many times I have heard Taylor talk about the power of gratitude for our mental health. Thankfulness is also a weapon that takes out the enemy’s lies. Prayer and thanksgiving combined protect our minds and give us peace.
Bible Verse #5 – Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:8
Bible Verse #6 – Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8
Joshua 1:8 and Philippians 4:8 communicate the positive and beneficial effectiveness of meditating on the good things of God’s word. Where do we find the things to think on that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy? We find them in the Bible. And as we meditate on Scripture, we see the promise of prosperity and success, and I submit to you that prosperity and success aren’t about wealth as much as they are about the state of the person. That is why Romans 12:2 tells us that the renewing of our minds helps prove God’s good, acceptable, and perfect will.
3) Conforming our Thoughts to God’s Will.
Bible Verse #7 – Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2
So many of our anxious or negative thoughts are rooted in fear, but God’s word clearly tells us that isn’t from God.
Bible Verse #8 – 2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7
Often our mind battles with things that speak condemning messages about us, but those do not belong in our mind either.
Bible Verse #9 – Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1
4) What God’s Word Says about You:
Bible Verse #10 – Psalm 139:14
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.
Psalm 139:14
Bible Verse #11 – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Bible Verse #12 – Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10
These are not just words on a page. They are powerful and true. They were meant to be transformative for us. The truth is we will always have some level of a battle with negative thoughts about ourselves trying to creep in and gain traction in our minds. But staying aware of our thoughts and making quick assessments of whether they are grounded in lies or truth matters to our spiritual and mental health. When we recognize negative thoughts in our minds that are based on lies, we use the truth of God’s Word as replacement thoughts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Negative Self-Talk and Renewing Your Mind
1. What does the Bible say about negative self-talk?
The Bible teaches us to pay attention to our thoughts and bring them into agreement with the truth of God’s Word. 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 tells believers to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. When a thought is rooted in fear, condemnation, shame, or a false identity, we can reject it and replace it with what God says is true.
2. How can Christian women overcome negative self-talk?
Christian women can overcome negative self-talk by recognizing the lies they have believed and replacing them with biblical truth. This includes reading Scripture, meditating on God’s Word, memorizing Bible verses, praying God’s promises, and evaluating thoughts before allowing them to shape emotions and actions. Renewing the mind is an ongoing process of choosing truth over lies.
3. Where does negative self-talk come from?
Negative self-talk may be influenced by painful experiences, criticism, comparison, fear, or the words of other people. However, Scripture identifies Satan as the father of lies who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy. His lies often attack our understanding of God, our identity, and our worth. Recognizing the source of a lie helps us resist it with the truth of Scripture.
4. Is positive thinking enough to renew my mind?
Positive thinking alone cannot provide the lasting transformation our minds need. Biblical renewal is not simply replacing a negative statement with a more encouraging one. It is replacing lies with the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Romans 12:2 teaches that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can recognize and live according to God’s will.
5. What Bible verses can help with negative thoughts?
Several powerful Bible verses can help Christian women overcome negative thoughts, including:
2 Corinthians 10:4–5 — Take every thought captive.
Philippians 4:6–8 — Pray, give thanks, and focus on what is true.
Romans 12:2 — Be transformed by renewing your mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 — God gives power, love, and a sound mind.
Romans 8:1 — There is no condemnation for those in Christ.
Psalm 139:14 — You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Ephesians 2:10 — You are God’s workmanship.
These verses remind us that God’s truth is stronger than the lies we have believed.
6. How do I replace negative thoughts with God’s truth?
Begin by identifying the specific message behind the negative thought. Ask yourself, “Is this thought consistent with what God says in Scripture?” When the thought is based on a lie, replace it immediately with a Bible verse that speaks directly to that struggle.
For example, replace “I am worthless” with the truth of Ephesians 2:10: You are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Repeating, praying, and meditating on biblical truth helps it become the foundation for how you think and live.
7. Can prayer help stop negative self-talk?
Yes. Prayer turns our focus away from fear and toward the character and faithfulness of God. Philippians 4:6–7 teaches us to bring everything to God through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. As we pray, God’s peace guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Prayer may not make every negative thought disappear immediately, but it helps us respond to those thoughts from a place of faith rather than fear.
